As long as the information is correct there is no way of removing these accounts. They will show for 7-years from the date of first delinquency per the Fair Credit Reporting Act. As far as credit cards, you might try Orchard Bank, H.S.B.C. & First Premier. They are all good about giving credit cards to people with damaged credit. Whichever one you get, use it for every day things, never exceed 30% of your credit limit in any given month and pay it off in full before the due date.

If you get a secured credit card- you pay the balance and it acts as your credit limit- after 6 months of "good" behavior- they are supposed to offer you a non-secure account. As for the things you've paid off- you need to write the companies you owed and ask them for a letter saying you have paid- which you can send in to which ever of the three major creditors it was reported too- this can be difficult once you've already paid- they lose interest in you once you don't owe them money and you usually have to trade your last payment for their letter. also look for a program called "7 steps to 720" its all about raising your credit score and it really helps..I've boosted mine a hundred points- I think the authors name is Philip Tyrone
